Spencer Young, born April 15, 1843 in Carroll County Mississippi, was the only child of Jesse Thomas Young and Jane Curry Bird.

At age 18, Spencer enlisted in the Civil War and fought in battles ranging from Gettysburg to Chaffin's Farm where he was severely wounded.  Because of his heroism, he was awarded a field commission of ensign.  Spencer Young Civil War History

Spencer Young married Margaret Mary Hale, daughter of Greene Dudley Hale of Warren County Arkansas, August 2, 1868Spencer and Margaret had six children:

Wilson Spencer Born 5/4/1869 Drew County Arkansas, married Laura Lee Gregory 8/2/1891, died Killeen, Texas 9/5/1930
Margaret Almedia Born January 1872 in Arkansas, married Will Rancier
Currie Jane Born January 16, 1874 Warren, Arkansas, married Robert Lee Polk 4/10/1892, died Killeen, Texas 10/25/1952
Arthur A. Born 1877  twin, died as an infant during family move to Texas
Luther A. Born 1877  twin, died 1884 in Killeen, Texas
  Thomas Green Born February 4, 1886 Bell County Texas, married Letha White, died Killeen, Texas August 6, 1929

 

The family relocated to Bell County, Texas about 1877, first to Troy, then Killeen where Spencer founded the Tillar-Young Ranch in 1882. 

Spencer served as a Bell County Commissioner from 1886 to 1892 and was elected State Representative to the 23rd Texas Legislature, November 8, 1892.  He also was a founder of the First National Bank of Killeen and operated a mercantile and ranch supply store.

Spencer Young died in Killeen October 17, 1924.   Margaret died in 1929.


                             

Spencer Young in the early 1860's, wearing his Civil War uniform. During his Civil War service, Spencer was wounded several times during the war and spent extended time in a field hospital. The missing finger of his left hand was lost in a childhood accident.

 

 

 

 

 

          

 

Spencer Young was a successful business man in Killeen.  He was a partner in the First National Bank. This photo shows Spencer at the teller cage of the bank, the teller is believed to be James Rancier.  In the early days the bank also served as a hardware and farm implement company, note the rifles and brooms on display for sale at the left of the photo. spncrbanksmall.jpg (27856 bytes)
