Genealogy Research Issues

It seems to take a measure of time for the big picture of the various genealogy trails one finds to sink in. The whole process of genealogical study is rather like examining some old artifact, turning the scattered facts over and over, looking at them from different angles before the secret of their significance becomes apparent.

This page contains some of the research issues and wild guesses currently under consideration.  Additional information, comment and criticisms will be welcome.

The Other Spencer Young   5/16/1999

The only known information on Jesse Young's origins is that he was born in SC and his father was named James.  There has been no information on his mother or possible siblings.

The 1850 census lists Jesse Thomas Young and family as residents of Carroll county MS.  His place of residence seems to be in the north eastern part of Carroll county.  The 1850 census also lists a Spencer Young residing in northern Holmes county, not far from Carroll county line.

Sometime in the late 1850's, Spencer Young moved to West Carroll Parish, LA., a location on the northern edge of Louisiana.  Jesse Thomas Young settled at this same time in the south eastern part of Drew county AR which is to the north of West Carroll parish, separated by Ashley county AR, a distance of about 50 miles.

Spencer, age 40 at the time of the 1850 census survey, was born in SC and had the following family:

Anna, wife 30 d 12/16/1862
Alvira, daughter 17
Narcissa, daughter 15 m Benjamin Sorrels 8/23/1855 Holmes county MS, d10/16/1862 West Carroll Parish, MS
James T., son 13
John T., son 11
Mary, daughter 9
Elizabeth, daughter 7 m J.H. Myers
Martha Jane, daughter 3 m George Stout
Joanna Camilla, daughter b 10/3/1850 born after census
Frances Pearl b 5/5/1853              "
Sarah Ida b 10/22/1855              "

Anna died 12/16/1862 and Spencer married Mary Guice 1/11/1863.   Spencer Young's family was closely associated with the Perry and Jackson families in West Carroll parish.

In July of 1861, a James T. Young enlisted in Company L of the 3rd Arkansas Infantry which was assembled at Ashley county (between Drew county AR and West Carroll parish LA).  Some sources have suggested that this enlistment was for Jesse Thomas Young (who would have been 38 at the time), the first name being misspelled.   It now seems clear however that this person is actually the son of Spencer Young of West Carroll parish LA.  Jesse Thomas Young's son Spencer had enlisted in Company C of the 3rd Arkansas Infantry in June.

So far, no relationship has been revealed between the two Young families.  There are striking similarities:

There seem to be a reasonable possibility that Jesse Thomas Young and Spencer Young are brothers.  Further research into the family of Spencer Young of West Carroll parish LA may reveal the answer.

Jesse Young's Place of Birth   6/6/1999

Jesse Thomas Young's place of birth has consistently been recorded as South Carolina.  Two references in particular have quoted the South Carolina;   A biographical article in the late 1800's concerning Jesse's oldest son Spencer and the U.S. census of 1910 recorded by Jesse's youngest son Edward both list Jesse Thomas Young's origin as South Carolina.

The recently avaialable FamilySearch database http://www.familysearch.org, reveals an interesting bit of information.  A general search for Jesse Young son of James, lists a Jesse Young born 4 April, 1822 in Stokes county North Carolina, source IGI Record, batch 7220821, sheet 76..

A possible family relationship between Hugh R. Young and Jesse Thomas Young    4/16/2000

It appears that at the time of his death, James C. Bird had a number of adult, married children, including a Selina W. Bird married to Hugh R. Young (see Carroll County Estate Records 1840 -1869).  This estate action occured in May of 1842, shortly before the marriage of Jane Curry Bird to Jesse Thomas Young in July of 1842.  Neither Jane Curry Bird nor her sister Aryann are listed in the estate action (however her brother Augustus appears to be included).   Is Hugh R. Young somehow related to Jesse Thomas Young or is the name a coincidence?  They seem to reside in the same north eastern part of Carroll county and are married into the same family.  While the name of Hugh Young appears in other transactions in Carroll county and it appears he was a successful farmer and active citizen of the county, his family history is so far unknown .  He represents a new, possible link for the family of Jesse Thomas Young.
