Mary Henley's father was William Washington Russell b 1735 d 1783, married about 1757 at Orange county VA to Tabitha Adams d 1776. William Washington Russell was a captain and colonel in the colonial wars and a Brigadier General in the Revolutionary War. After the war, he became a representative to the Virginia Assembly. William Washington Russell's father was William Russell b 1687 in England d 1757, married in 1730 to Mary Henley. William Russell immigrated from England with Sir Alex Spotswood and settled in Spotsylvania county, VA in 1710. He was an officer in the British Army of Occupation an Defense in the Virginia colony.
At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War William Bowen was appointed to the command of a company of Virginia Volunteers. Captain Bowen belonging to the cavalry, was principally engaged in scouting and protecting the frontier settlement on the borders of Virginia and Tennessee. He was at the battle of Point Pleasant 10/10/1774 and served under General William Washington Russell (his future father-in-law) at Fort Randolph in 1775. He was with Russell's rangers when they assisted in relieving the besieged fort at Watauga.

John Bowen b 1696 d 1761, married in 1730 at PA to Lilly McIlhaney b 1705 in PA d 4/1/1780 at Washington county, Va.
John Bowen lived in Maryland before migrating to Virginia. The earliest record is a bond to Col. Patton dated 4/15/1748, Augustus county VA, surveyed 1847 on Buckeye Bottom, now known as Clifton Forge. John Bowen probably moved his family to Augustus about 1845.

William Bowen (b 1742 Orange county VA, d 12/15/1804 Sumner county TN). Married Mary Henley Russell (b 1750 VA, d 1815) 1777.
